The Harsh Reality of Mental Health In Cecil County
Cecil County faces significant behavioral health challenges: nearly half of residents rank mental health as a top concern, yet our county is federally designated as a mental health professional shortage area. Adults here report more days of poor mental health than the state and national average, and one in three has experienced multiple adverse childhood experiences—well above state and national rates.
Barriers like cost, insurance, and transportation leave many without the care they need, especially youth, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people in rural areas. Substance use and overdose rates are among the highest in Maryland.
On Our Own of Cecil County exists to bridge these gaps. Our peer-led, trauma-informed support, resource navigation, and welcoming environment help ensure that no one in our community has to face these challenges alone.
- Peer Support & Recovery: The shortage of mental health professionals and high rates of poor mental health underscore the importance of peer-led, accessible support like OOOCC provides.
- Resource Navigation: Barriers such as cost, insurance, and transportation highlight the value of OOOCC’s help with benefits, applications, and connecting people to services.
- Trauma-Informed Approach: High ACEs rates and the focus on childhood trauma align with OOOCC’s emphasis on trauma-informed peer support.
- Substance Use Support: Elevated substance use and overdose rates make OOOCC’s recovery groups and harm reduction resources especially relevant.
